PORTSMOUTH - John Hines "Jay" Underwood III died in the early morning hours of March 2, 2008. He was born Aug. 18, 1952, in Pensacola, Fla. Mr. Underwood was the son of the late Lt. Cmdr. John H. Underwood Jr. and the late Mary Griffin Underwood.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Frances Moore "Fran" Underwood and his beloved son, John H. Underwood IV. Other family surviving Mr. Underwood are his mother-in-law, Rebecca H. Moore; his brother-in-law, Timothy M. Moore and wife Betty; his sister-in-law, Janet M. LaPrade and husband John; his uncle, Benn B. Griffin and his sister, Mary Beth Underwood. Failes(WWHS June, ’66) and husband John.
Mr. Underwood grew up in Portsmouth and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in June of 1970. He graduated from Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia School of Law.
He practiced law in Portsmouth for 30 years. At the time of his death, Mr. Underwood was serving as the public defender for the City of Portsmouth. He was hired to establish the Portsmouth Office, which was one of the first in the Commonwealth of Virginia. He held the position for 22 years. Mr. Underwood served as a Board member of the Portsmouth Public Library for a number of years.
Memorial donations may be made to the Friends of the Portsmouth Public Library, 601 Court St., Portsmouth, VA 23704.
Visitation will be held at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Mr. Underwood's funeral will be held in Churchland Baptist Church Thursday at 1 p.m. Burial plans are to be announced.
