CHARLOTTESVILLE - Lula Maye "Lu" Newton Hamilton, 82, died March 2, 2008. Born in Portsmouth Nov. 23, 1925, she was the daughter of the late William L. Newton and Lula Gatling Newton. She was predeceased by sisters, Jean Sellers and Lillian Schmitt and brothers Richard Newton, William Newton and James Newton. Lu is survived by Dale C. Hamilton Sr., her husband of 60 years.
The family includes their children, Dale C. Hamilton Jr. and his wife Yvette of Wilmington, N.Y., Alan G. Hamilton and his wife Suzanne of Charlottesville, Jean H. Mastrogiovanni and her husband William of Binghamton, N.Y., Anne Hamilton of Charlottesville and Ruth Love Hamilton Szucs and her husband Richard of Richmond. Lu is also survived by a sister, Bessie N. Haynes and a brother, Howard O. Newton and many extended family members. Lu was a devoted and loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Lu and Dale have been blessed with six grandchildren: Meredith H. Moneymaker and her husband Joseph, Emily S. Hamilton, Elizabeth H. Setliff, Catherine H. Setliff, Alexandra L. Szucs and Matthew H. Szucs, and one great-granddaughter, Taylor M. Moneymaker.
Lu was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, Class of 1942 ½, and attended Marrs Hill College in North Carolina.
Lu worked at State Farm Insurance Co. in the 1950s. She then worked at Burnley-Moran Elementary School for 17 years as a teacher's aide and as the school's secretary. Her passions in life were her family, church, music and her gardening. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, involved in many aspects of church life mostly working with children. She also made crocheted Crismons for the Christmas tree at church. Lu was an accomplished pianist, and her love of music inspired each of her children to pursue their musical talents. She loved roses; much of her time was spent in her gardens.
Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Teague Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held in First Baptist Church Park Street tomorrow at 2 p.m. Following the service, family and friends may gather at the family's home.
