Wilson’s high powered offensive girl’s basketball team beat First Colonial on Monday night in a game that made the Princeton offense look like a high-octane fast-break.
After a first quarter in which the Lady Presidents(22-4) showed an edge in athleticism, First Colonial coach Larry Bowman ordered his players to hold the ball for almost the entire second and third quarters. The plan kept things close, but in the end Wilson proved too tough, winning 20-12 at Booker T. Washington to advance to the Eastern Region quarterfinals tonight against King’s Fork.
“We didn’t match up with them athletically,” Bowman said. “So if they were going to let us be down five in the fourth quarter, I’m happy with that.”
Wilson led 11-6 after one quarter, thanks to an attacking defense that constantly forced turnovers. The only points of the second quarter came when Wilson guard JoNiquia Guilford stole a pass with 12 seconds left and drew a foul, making both foul shots.
First Colonial (19-6) held the ball for the entire third quarter, but missed a 3-point try in the closing seconds. The Patriots were within 15-10 with 4:49 left, but again succumbed to the Presidents’ defense, turning the ball over on three straight possessions, effectively ending the game.
Afterward, Bowman had one regret. “I wish we had started (the stall) earlier,” he said. Meanwhile, Wilson coach Norman Smith saw a benefit to playing such a slow game. “We have a big game (today),” he said. “And we’re all rested now.”
The Presidents won’t wait long to see if Smith’s “rested” philosophy pays off. They play in tonight’s Eastern Region quarterfinals at King’s Fork, 7 p.m. The Bulldogs (23-3), easily handled Menchville (12-13) of Newport News, 57-34 in last nights other opening round play.
