Portsmouth’s Woodrow Wilson High School scholastic athletic program has seen its share of bumps and bruises in the past few years. The once proud Presidents traditionally fielded competitive programs in most all sports.
However, due to a series of events, including relocation of the school, a shrinking student enrollment and the changing nature of the economic base of the general student population, all have spelled doom and gloom for this once dominating institution. Friday night, the girl’s basketball team put all that aside to bring home a rare but appreciated trophy for the Orange and Blue.
The Eastern District girls tournament final between Wilson and Lake Taylor was on the menu. Wilson, which lost to district regular-season champion Lake Taylor twice this season, got its revenge by downing the Titans 62-43 in a game played at the Churchland gym.
Wilson and Lake Taylor met for the fourth time with the Titans holding a 2-1 advantage.
The Presidents (21-4) evened it up as they used a 12-0 run in the third quarter to go from a one-point advantage at the half to 13 … and never looked back.
“This game didn’t have any significance in terms of next week but it meant a lot to us because we lost the previous two games to them,” said Wilson coach Roger Smith. “Now we’re on a little roll and this gives us extra confidence going into Monday’s tournament.”
Wilson was led by senior JoNiquia Guilford. The Old Dominion-bound guard finished with a game-high 24 points. Shakiyla Finney added 15 and Eulandra Forrest had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Presidents.
Lake Taylor (21-3) was led by Tashima Newsome’s eight points.
