Robert Lawrence Oliver, 86, of the 600 block of Whitestone Ave., passed away Saturday, Dec., 29, 2007, in Lynchburg. A native of Portsmouth, he was retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Shop 11, after 32 years as a leadman shipfitter. After retirement, he worked for both Portsmouth and Chesapeake Redevelopment and Housing authorities. He was a former member of Elm Avenue United Methodist Church and a member of the Portsmouth Gridiron Club.
Mr. Oliver was a quarterback for Wilson High School football in the late 1930s and later played softball in the commercial league. He also coached in the Babe Ruth League in Prentiss Park Wythe Street.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. His wife, Virginia Story Oliver, preceded him in death. Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Wood and husband Ronald of Virginia Beach, Joyce Thacker and husband Jimmy of Portsmouth and Katherine Dupree of Lynchburg; a brother-in-law, Bill Story and wife Verda of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two nephews. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Robert Friend. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m.
They suggest memorial donations be made to Bon Secours Hospice, Hospice House in Lynchburg or the Alzheimer’s Association, Southeast Virginia Chapter. The family would like to thank his devoted caregivers, Holly Barner, Maggie Brown, Barbara Deloatch and Barbara Lawton.
