Brad,
You have a good point. I hate to say it but, it does seem that we are becoming a nation of people with extremist views in all things. Religion, politics, economics, etc. And unfortunately, it seems that we are all becoming less tolerant as well. What's the term; thin skinned? And I am just as guilty as everybody else.
Sometimes, I think if it weren't for the people that need me, I would just pack up and find a nice deserted mesa out west and never come down.
I have an emerging thought that really scares me. While I have capitalistic leanings, I am becoming very fearful that these captains of economics and, industry in this nation will literally be one of the driving influences in the downfall of this country. The other one is our idiot assed politicians. Their despicable pork barrel politics and, allowing the outsourcing jobs to third world countries is causing thousands of Americans their jobs. And without naming names, some of our so called political leaders are very deep in the pockets of these capitalists. The rich keep getting richer and, the poor get poorer. And those of us in the middle class are getting our backs broken under the increasing burden of these other two. I am very fearful that it will get to the point where all of the unemployed, homeless and overburdened will rise up, arm themselves and hunt down and kill those who are better off than themselves. A massive armed insurrection in the US? I think it's very possible. And if you have literally tens of millions of starving, homeless, really pissed off Americans taking to the streets, we do not have the number of civilian and, military authorities to stop it. There could be a whole lot of politicians being lynched and, burned at the stake on the Mall in D.C. Not that I would condone such a thing but, folks are gettin' desperate out there. I hope, and would like to think that it won't get to that point. I would like to think that deep down we are better than degenerating into a lawless armed mob.
I found a Internet site that I keep going to. It's called the Avalon Project, I believe. They are making available online all of this nation's political documents. The Declaration, the Constitution, Alien and Sedition Acts, Monroe Doctrine, etc, etc. I had to set a daily time limit of one hour on this site.
I guess I am a romantic anachronism trying hard to cope in the modern world. I would definitely have been one of those cold, starving colonial soldiers leaving bloody footprints in the snow marching to Valley Forge.
I'm very scared that we are losing the ideals of honor, integrity and, justice. It seems that we are putting our own selfish interests ahead of living and, working for the common good of this country, it's citizens and, the ideals on which this country was founded. We have met the enemy and, it is ourselves. And yet, we are still here and at times, we are at our best when we are at our worst. And with all of the problems that we have, we are all still part of the Great Experiment. And, we somehow continue to be a part of something that had never been achieved before in the history of mankind, that of liberty, self rule and, self determination. With all of our problems and differences, I would still give everything I have, including my last ounce of energy, my last breath for this place and, all of you knuckleheads out there. But, before ya'll get the big head, I would surmise that alot of you guys are fatter, uglier and, stinkier than I am. Har, sorry, couldn't resist that one.
In all seriousness, there's a saying by one of our colonial leaders at the start of the Revolution that went something like,"we should all damned well hang together or, we will surely hang apart." I'd take the rope before I would give up anything that WE all have on this little patch of dirt. Boy, you can sure tell by the length of my latest diatribe that I need to get a life.
But,that's my story and, I'm sticking to it.
