An excellent perspective Dr. Conley. Thanks for the in-depth examination of this situation which you have provided.
Many allies of the United State espouse some socialistic views, and indeed, the United States, itself, has slowly moved towards some manifestations of socialism since at least the days of F.D.R's "New Deal".
What stands out about Benazir Bhutto is her heroism. Bobby Kennedy knew when he sought the 1968 Democratic nomination for the Presidency that in doing so he was making himself an even greater target than he already was. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. knew that in leading the Civil Rights Movement he was making himself a target. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi knew he was making himself a target when he opposed British Colonialism in South Africa, and later in India. Anwar El Sadat also knew that he was making himself a target when he went to Israel, spoke to the Knesset & made peace with Israel. Izhtakh Rabin knew the same when he reached out to the Arab world, as well. Probably all of these great men wanted to live as much as any of us---probably none had a death wish. But they prized the cause of freedom more highly than life, itself. I believe the same is true of Benazir Bhutto.
In the recent film, "300", there is a scene where an aide to King Leonidas warns him about meeting with an emissary from the enemy camp, expressing a fear that the enemy might kill him; "Let's pray that they're THAT stupid", replies Leonidas. Although I doubt Benazir Bhutto prayed that her enemies were that stupid, I believe that in the commission of this craven act they have so proven themselves to be. And I agree fully that this intelligent, forceful, elegant woman was, indeed, a "Daughter of Destiny" and what's more, is now a hero for the ages.
