Joseph was a veteran of the World War II, having enlisted in the U.S. Army Jan. 21, 1941, where he rose to the rank of battalion sergeant major and achieved the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal and European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal. He participated in the Invasion of Normandy as a member of the 111th Field Artillery. Joseph was a revered member of the congregation at Gomley Chesed Synagogue for many years. In 1985, Joseph was wedded to the love of his life, Mary Friedman, his first and only marriage. Following her passing on Aug. 27, 1999, he remained a beloved member of both his family and hers and passed away Oct. 15, 2007, at the age of 91, in the company of friends, family and his longtime caregivers who loved him very much. He is survived by a stepdaughter, Diane Lynn Friedman (Bienstock)(WWHS '62) of Phoenix, Ariz.; a stepson, Robert Stewart Friedman(WWHS '59) of Charlottesville, Va.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are welcomed to be made to Gomley Chesed Synagogue, 3110 Sterling Point Drive, Portsmouth, VA 23703. A funeral will be held at Gomley Chesed today at 11:30 a.m. by Rabbi Philip S. Krohn. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, will be handling these arrangements.

Joseph was born Oct. 26, 1915, in Portsmouth where he was proud to live most of his life.
He graduated Woodrow Wilson High School in June, 1934.
