Most of the muskies you will encounter in the Potomac (Hancock to Dargan)are pure strain muskies, the result of natural reproduction from an unknown original source. Upstream and downstream of this area most of the muskies are stocked tigers. Many of the muskies you may encounter in the Potomac (Washington Co)have been tagged with a "spaghetti" tag. These tags are located at the base of the dorsal fin on the left side. To read the tag you may have to scrape off the algae. Maryland DNR biologists are using the data from these tags to learn more about movements and growth. Call 301-898-9724 or e-mail at lewistown-wc2@dnr.state.md.us to report your catch's length and location. If you catch a tagged muskie it has been caught and released before. Please consider releasing even legal fish as they are too valuable to be caught and enjoyed only once. I fish the river often, hope to see you on the water. Good Fishing!
