Posted by Tom H. On that head out of the water thing, that's a pretty common occurence. They won't bite when they are doing that, so don't waste your time with those fish. I have seen it in the summer and fall as well. Trout colored lures are popular where I fish too, and I've read lots of stuff suggesting that pike and muskies like prey with soft rayed fins, such as trout. There's very little information out there suggesting that musky will bite consistently on spoons. I have tried and had no success. As far as the bucktails go, some fishermen swear by them, others just swear at them.

I have had more success with metal leaders that are silver, than the black coated ones. Actually, my next time out I'm going to try without a metal leader. I have read some local info suggesting that is a good thing to do, and I've never caught a tiger musky with the lure deep in its mouth exposing the leader to the teeth anyway. I'm going to use 20lb test Trilene XT because it is supposed to be very abrasion resistant. The guy that holds the Utah catch-and-release musky record uses 20lb test fluorocarbon for a leader, I believe.
