Re: Was at Takhli 72-73 with 474th TFW F111's
Bill, thanks for getting back. Yes the 428th was there in 68. I knew some of those guys. Actually two of them went back for there second tour in 72. Quinn Jolly was the name of one of those guys, but I cant remember the other guys name. Jolly was crew chief on 66018 at Nellis. 018 was the first 111 to reach 1000 hrs airtime. I've been wanting to get in touch with someone at the F-111.net site, because I can remember some other things they may be interested in. You probably remember 67072 losing a main tire on take off with 24 bombs on board. I can still see it sliding down the runway engulfed in flames. I actually saw the right seat pilot jump out. We stayed on the ground for quite awhile, when the bombs started cooking off. 67074 was the first 111 to fly 100 bombing missions. Ron Witte was the Crew chief. I also remember a red tail making it back one night all beat up because he got a sam light, jettisoned his bombs and flew into them. I dont remember the tail number. Well, nice chatting with you. Lots of memories. I went over with the first wave. I was there the night we lost 078. I came back in spring 73. Talk to you later. GK.
