Well, I am well aware about what the F-111A does and how it flew to it's targets over Vietnam Cambodia and loas. They flew very very low to the ground. They used their TFR all the way to and from their tartgets. However,,, they did Not shoot anything with their guns. They did not even take their guns over their in the first place. In fact,,the F-111A's from Nellis AFB never even used their guns at all. Most off the 474th TFW guys didn't even know they had guns, let alone used them.
However, we shure did load the F-111A's down with one heck of a lot of bombs though. Those aadvarks from Nellis at Takhli would carry 24 500lb at a time.
As for flying low to the ground,,well,,the ECM pods that hung under the belly of the Aarvarks (F-111A) would be filled with tree leaves upon the return from missions. That is how low they flew. The F-111A's from Nellis AFB that were deployed to Takhli RTAFB in 72 73 were the Only F-111's that were ever over there.
I was an Avionics Maintnance person in the A Shop to the F-111A's at Nellis AFB with the 474th TFW / 474th Avioncs Maintnace Squadron.
And yes,,I did repair severl of the TFR's while at Takhli and at Nellis.

Oh,,by the way,,It was the guys from 474th TFW that insisted on the F-111's being called "Aardvark".
