FUN MEMORIES"
While there in 66-67, we occasionally got tapped to pull guard duty at the ammo dump during the night. Here you were out there without benefit of light so as to not give away your position. Why that really mattered escaped me, considering we were armed with a billy club and a whistle. I used to say that if attacked, just blow on the billy club and throw the whistle at them for all the good either would do. You weren't allowed to carry cigarettes or matches either, but we always tucked them into our socks, for if you were fortunate enough to get posted next to the 20MM and small arms ammo, you could slip into a passageway in the side of the storage stacks and under the overlapping tarps, then proceed along the passageway to a point where several tarp edges overlapped, light up, and poke your head out through the tarps in order to watch for the AP's truck so as to not get caught out of your assigned area. This little trick was common knowledge in the ranks, but the powers that be probably knew about it anyway considering all the scuffed out butts there in the passageway.
