One night while on truck patrol in a sixpack 3/4 T truck and while dropping of Thai AF guards on their post for the night along the perimeter it was raining and we came up on a small ( 2+ feet) russel viper that was all stretched out crawling across the perimeter road. I carried a long blade fold-out knife and I had plans to get out and chop off it's head with a quick whack. The SPS guys on the truck said there was no risk because it was stretched out and had to be coiled up (wrong) to strike at me...... and they weren't too dangerous (wrong). I took a quick carefully aimed whack at it but missed. It quickly coiled up and I quickly ran back to the truck. We then proceeded to run over it about ten times with the truck. The Thai AF guys in the back of our truck cheered. They hated snakes. Very memorable night. I will always remember it. If it had bitten me and I lived then maybe at least there would be a record of it I could use for my disability claim as proof of being on the perimeter as an augmentee guard.
