Re: the early days
Jim: I remember when I first got there, anyone coming back to the base in the morning had their name put in a ledger that was given to the base commander. the 13th AF/CC--2 star Whip Wilson came to visit Takhli and some Major told him about the ledger. My buddy was on the gate when ole Whip came with the base CC--asked for the ledger and tore it up. Told the base cc there were men--not babies at Takhli! The base CC was in charge as at that time all the squadrons were rotational. What a sight to see--Whip Wilson--about 5'5" accompanied by the base CC--about 6'5"--I remeber them coming to the supply building--Whip in a flight suit with his moccasins on!! I worked 7 days a week--nothing else for me--I didn't drink and the bars were just "whore houses" that served liquor. They were just building the new NCO quarters when I left--they were nice!! They wanted me to move as I'd made SSgt--I said I only have about a month to go--so I just continued to live in the hooches behind the "Green Monster" near the NCO Club and theater. Takhli was a real experience. I went there as a 21 year old first termer and came back having grown up a lot!! My email is fishing9209@aol.com We live at Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. Bob
