There was a situation like this in August or so of '72. It was reported in the national news as an attack on the base. It was actually on my post and was relatively close to the main gate.
I actually heard bullets whizzing past me in the tall jungle grass at the end of the runway. RSAT teams were called out and set up a bar ambush on the perimeter road. We kept illumination up for about an hour. The Thai 81mm mortar team did not have much experience and set fire to the grass next to the main gate.I had to clear that end of the runway in the jungle by the perimeter fence. Not fun.
It eventually turned out that it was the Thai Police who were chasing some thieves.
Anyway, in 4 years as a k-9 handler, I never once heard a true story as to what we actually did.
