I did not spend the night at Takhli. I wished that I had more time to spend at Takhli, but I didn't. My schedual was very busy as it was. While I was in Thailand last October 2005, I was headquardered in Pattaya Beach at the Nova Lodge Hotel. While I was there, I went up to Bangkok for one week where I stayed at the Ambassador Hotel. While I was at Bangkok, I took the day trip to the town of Takhli in a privite taxi that I hired for a set fee. I don't remember how much it cost me,,, I think maybe it was about 5,000Baht total for the round trip. It was more then I wanted to pay, but I was pressed for time. If I was not pressed for time,, I would have taken either the Train or a Bus up to Takhli. Now,, If you take the train up to Takhli or the Buss,,, both modes are good and have airconditioning. Its not like it was back in the old days where you had to sit with the ladies and all the farm animals they were tagging along. But if I were you, I would keep a "Plan B" just in case. I think you may find a hotel over in Chinot or that little town in the other direction from the old base. As of right now,, I am planning on making another trip back over to Thailand in October 2006. I will again be based in Pattaya Beach, but I will be looking to take a female companion/translator with me to Takhli and plan on spending two or three days milling around in town and trying to talk to several people, and try to locate some of the old bar girls (working girls) from the 72-73 time era and chat with them about the town. As for staying at the Parnsawan Hotel,,, Well,,, I have stayed there back in 72 and 73 era, but I don't see much change in the hotel accomadations since then,, but I would stay there if it was just me. My ex wife however, if we were still married would never allow me to stay there. But thats my ex wife for you. I can ruff it if I need to. After all,,, I was in TAC for my four years of AF. I hope this helps you out a bit. Bill Myatt
Hello Paul,
Also,,when I went up there, I did not know if there were any hotels that were still operating in town or not. What I found was that the old Parnsawan Hotel was still in business, only they only use the first two or three floors ans the rest of the floors are in bad need of repair. It is still a "Mom and Pop" type hotel. I think the going price for rooms there was about 730Baht. At least I think that is what the girl at the reception desk said to me when I first walked in to talk to her. I told her that I was only there to go up on the top floor and go out on the patio up there to take pictures. I took pictures from the top patio back in 1972 and now I have pictures that I took in 2005. There is a big change between the two sets of pictures that were taken from the same place only 33 years apart.
Down town Takhli,,,the main part that we knew was mostly on the west side of the train tracks, and very little on the east side of the tracks. Now days, the part of town we knew is old and not used much, and the east side of town is now growing and is the busiest. I didn't get into much of that part of town, but there could be a new hotel in that part of town, but I don't know for sure.
If you need more info,,, you can contact me at my email address as listed. Just be sure and use the word "Takhli" in the subject line so the spam filter doesn't zap it.
