Posted by Ann on 3/2/2006, 1:47 pm, in reply to "what is the purpose of lunging?" lunging is also used to get rid of extra energy. what i do, to start teaching a horse to lunge, is take the horse on a long lead (10 or 12 ft), and drive the horse out. it may take a few times for the horse to understand. another way...if you have an extra person, have them lead the horse, and respond to the "commands" you call out..."whoa", "walk on", "walk out", "turn", etc. what i require of my horse in lunging is simply obedience. i'm not sure what others would say. a great place for info would be to go to www.marvwalker.com and look at the stuff there. there's an email list/group, that's full of wonderful, knowledgeable people who could be a wonderful help! hope this will help some!

imho, the main purpose of lunging is education. the horse learns to obey verbal commands.
