agree with Jolynn you need to let him go up but you can start doing stuff with him. It is ok to start getting him use to a saddle and a equipment but dont get on him yet . If you are just sitting on him its not bad but dont try to ride him yet. Make sure he can do all the basic stuff like getting use to farrier work, loading in and out of trailer, stuff like that. Wait till he is about two and half then send him off to a trainer to get a handle put on him and start the pattern. There is no way to train the barrel pattern from the ground , now basics you can but not to where you get on him point him to a barrel he is going to run to it rate, sit down and turn. A doesnt stop growing till 5 so that is why you cant start them so young because their joint and stuff are too soft basically .. Now if you talk to a racehorse trainer they are going to tell you something completely different because horses start to race at two. Dont start him in an english saddle unless you might do some sort of english type riding with him. the key with babies is patience and it takes time
