You really need to wait. barrel racing is a very intense physical sport. You risk damaging your colt's joints, and causing permanent damage by doing too much too soon. I have a 6 year old paint gelding that was given to me rather than sent to slaughter. He was barrel raced at two and three and developed ring bone in a hind leg, he can't even trot now. Fortunately, he isn't in pain and is happy to be left out to pasture and doing occasional slow walks with the kids. my point is, why risk permanent disablity...let your colt grow up.
