The park closed at dusk because there was no place to stay. But now, there are cabins, and when the sun goes down, a lucky few have the park all to themselves. The 10 new cabins at Lake Anna in Spotsylvania County are the first of 63 to be built at six state parks as a result of $119 million in park bonds approved by voters in 2002. The park system had approximately 200 cabins before the current construction began. Thirteen cabins will open next year at Bear Creek Lake State Park in Cumberland County, 13 at Occoneechee on Buggs Island Lake, 18 at James River in Buckingham County, four at Claytor Lake in the New River Valley and five at Kiptopeke on the Eastern Shore. Most of the parks will have two-bedroom cabins, though Kiptopeke will have six-bedroom lodges suitable for an extended family. Of the six parks, Claytor Lake is the only one with pre-existing cabins.
