Fishin' With Gus! - October 9, 2005
Monthly - NFA Winter Striper Tournament Announced
The Norman Fishery Alliance is a group of area fishermen dedicated to improving the quality of fishing on Lake Norman. The NFA was instrumental in persuading the NCWRC to enact new regulations limiting the size and number of crappie allowed to be taken from Lake Norman. Until the eight inch minimum- twenty fish per day rule was established, the crappie population was almost decimated from over harvesting. Thanks to the NFA's efforts, the crappie fishery is now showing signs of recovery.
The NFA, in conjunction with the Lake Norman Striper Swipers, requested and were granted a rule change that suspended the twenty-inch size limit on stripers caught between June 1 and September 30. This change was necessary because undersized stripers had to be released according to the law, and were dying from the stress of the fight or from the summer heat. It was not uncommon to see undersized stripers gilling (dying) on the surface in areas where anglers were striper fishing. Anglers continued to catch, release and kill untold numbers of stripers until the new law became effective. Now, it is legal during the summer months, to catch and keep the first four stripers, regardless of size. Anglers are encouraged to fish for other species once the creel limit has been reached.
The NFA has also been active in re-establishing gizzard shad in Lake Norman. Gizzard shad are the primary forage fish for stripers in other area lakes. Lakes with robust populations of gizzard shad tend to harbor trophy stripers.
The NFA's 2005-2006 tournament schedule has been modified. Six tournaments, one per month from November thru April, will allow more flexibility for many fishermen. Sign up will be at Midway Restaurant the day of the tournament from 5:45-6:00 a.m. and at Robichaux Bait and Tackle (704 658 1975) throughout the respective month. The entry fee is $100 per boat with a 100 percent payback for first, second and third places. Anglers must be NFA members to participate. The first tournament of the new season is scheduled for Sunday, November 12, 2005.
Upcoming Seminar
Rigging for Lake Norman Striped Bass and Catfish
Thursday - October 13, 2005 - 6:30 until 9:00 p.m. Bass Pro Shops, Concord Mills
Lake Norman fishing guides Mac Byrum, Capt. Craig Price, and Capt. Gus Gustafson will conduct a "How To" seminar for catching stripers and catfish. Topics will include how to rig live/cut baits, how to fish with down/flat lines, and how to fish for striped bass with planer boards. Techniques used for catching catfish while drifting, trolling and anchored will also be discussed. The seminar is free and open to the public. Call 704-979-2200 for additional information.
Hot Spot of the week: Stripers, bass and white perch are showing signs of feeding activity around the islands between markers 20 and 23 at Lake Norman's northern end. The past week striper fishing was fair to good, while fishing for bass and catfish was good to very good.
The lake level is 98.2 or 1.8 feet below full pond. Lake waters are generally clear with surface temperatures in the high seventies and low eighties.
Tips from Gus!
