What the military wasn't able to confiscate, however, was fishing tackle. Veteran fisherman Capt. Blaine Van Gansbeke, of Louisville, Ky., knew where he could get some: the Gander Mountain store at Castleton. One problem: He was on his second tour in three years with the U.S. Army's 36th Infantry Division in Baghdad.

So he wrote to the Gander Mountain store and explained the predicament of the troops having boats, water and off-duty recreation time, but no rods, reels and lures. "He said he hunts and fishes and that he has been in the store a million times," said Cindy Krieger, the store's apparel gift manager. The captain said that anything the store could send would be appreciated.
