Posted on Fri, Mar. 25, 2005 LAKE NORMAN STRIPER FISHING | GUS GUSTAFSON Catfish never hibernate, as some fishermen tend to do. Migration patterns of catfish and stripers are similar, but different. Cats can tolerate warmer water and lower amounts of dissolved oxygen. On the other hand, stripers prefer cool water and require higher levels of oxygen. Spring through early summer, and again from fall until early winter, you'll find stripers and cats sharing common water. On the coldest days of winter, stripers swim throughout the water column, while cats will congregate where water temperatures are less oppressive.
