Posted by StriperChaser on December 29, 2004, 9:06 am The Coast Guard, which began a campaign this month to encourage ice anglers, boaters and water skiers to wear a flotation device, says water cooler than 70 degrees can lower body temperature and cause hypothermia. A body can cool down 25 times faster in cold water than in air. According to the Coast Guard, the survival time in water 32.5 degrees is 15 to 45 minutes. Exhaustion or unconsciousness occurs in less than 15 minutes. In water 32.5 to 40 degrees, exhaustion or unconsciousness occurs within 15 to 30 minutes and the time of survival is 30 to 90 minutes. And in water 40 to 50 degrees, exhaustion or unconsciousness occurs within 30 to 60 minutes and the expected time of survival is one to three hours.
