I launched again out of Occoneechee early morning. Same problem catching bait. Not sure what has happened this spring but we have seldom had trouble catching bait in Sandy Creek. Last several years the bait has been plentiful around the green lights at the old Clarksville Bridge but not so far in 2009. Crawdad was also there and he found the same hard time with bait. I caught all mine at the Sandy Creek Bridge but tried to help Crawdad find bait in the Marina Cove. We ended up just splitting what I had caught but it turned out to be enough for both boats. I fished up river from the mouth of Bluestone back down to the next buoy without seeing much bait or fish. Crawdad fished from Irish Creek up to Buffalo Creek catching a few cats along the way. I rode down the lake from the bridges to Goat Island and finally found a decent amount of bait pods around Junkman’s. We caught one throw back striper and put the boat on the trailer at noon.
I’m not sure what has happened to the striper fishing this spring. We had an exceptionally good winter fishing in Rudd’s Creek this year but it been a terrible spring for striper fishing. Every year through last year when the fish came through Clarksville in the spring there were several weeks of good fishing from Junkman’s to where the rivers split. I’ve been up there every weekend in April and have not seen the fish come through. Almost every year there would be boats on top of each other catching fish in the spring above the bridges but not this year. I’m not sure if it has the been the muddy water from all the rains or the cold nights and wild swings in water temps. Even if the fish have already gone up river it usually happens during a period of several weeks not just in a few days. Either all the stripers have not gone up into the rivers or they are not going at all but something is very different about the spring of 2009.
