Hi all,
If you get a call from someone at DFG asking if you caught a disk-tagged sturgeon, it's a legitimate call intended to improve the white sturgeon abundance, harvest rate, and survival rate estimates.
We are calling everyone who reported --- on 2007-2009 Sturgeon Fishing Report Cards --- the length of sturgeon they caught. That'll mostly be people who kept sturgeon, but many people also reported the lengths of the sturgeon they released.
We are asking if a disk tag was on any of the fish those people reported, and (if so) whether they reported the tag to us, got paid the reward, etc.
With the information from this phone survey, we can include many more fish in the calculations and (thus) the estimates will have tighter confidence intervals.
Because catch-and-release is so prevalent now, doing this phone survey is much more cost effective than sending more creel clerks into the field to interview sturgeon anglers.
If you have questions or concerns about this, please contact me at the numbers in my signature block.
Thanks
