Hello all,
We are trying to understand why striped bass boomed in the late 1990's even though their indices of young-fish abundance were very low. It would not take many good years to get the kind of boom we saw...perhaps just one or two in a row.
We've summarized the catch per unit effort (CPUE) for striped bass from Party Boats since 1980. When we plot CPUE from the ocean and from inside the Golden Gate, 1980 and 1993 stick out. In both those years, CPUE in the ocean was very low compared to inside the Gate.
CPUE inside the Gate is a good index of adult striped bass abundance. CPUE trends inside and outside the Gate are usually very similar. Thus, it would seem either that (1) very few adult striped bass went outside in 1980 and 1993 and/or (2) conditions for fishing outside --- or the anglers --- were especially bad those two years. Note also the trend towards greater CPUE inside the Gate over time.
Would you take a look at the plots here (you'll need to zoom in)...

...and let me know if they generally fit your understanding, and if you recall anything special about 1980 and 1993?
Thanks
