Tired of attending agency meetings where we know that we go unheard, Delta farmers, anglers, boaters, enviromentalists, and water activists had our own meeting Saturday to seek solutions and to get organized.
It was a call to action.
No governamental officials dictated the agenda. None of the water agencies pushing for a peripheral canal. Only a diverse cross section of true Delta interests, from farmers to lawyers.
The recurring theme was that each of us must become a Delta Advocate as voiced by organizer Barbara Barrigan-Parrila.
U.S. Represantives Jerry McNerney and George Miller echoed calls for unity, even between groups that don't always see eye-to-eye.
"We need to protect this Delta, and we're going to do this by organizing ourselved," McNerney said.
State Senator Lois Wolk said that she hopes that this is a strong effort to raise the profile of the Delta.
Saturdays symposium will be followed up by a written report outlining some goals, Barrigan-Parilla said.
As soon as these reports are available I will post them. this should give us plenty to do in the near future. John B.
