As some folks know there has been an annual fish orgy when DFG dumps salmon smolts at Hew Hope up in the delta and down in the bay at Rodeo. The smolts attract the stripers who gorge on the smolts and the stripers attract anglers who over harvest the stripers.
The good news is (barring any unforeseen circumstances) that ain't gonna' happen anymore. As of last Friday they started up the salmon smolt acclimation program and are now dumping the smolts into net pens to allow them to acclimate, then tow them out into the main tidal current and drift with the tide as they release the smolts. This will go on from now through June. It is amazing how quick DFG hatchery folks can change their minds when the salmon population collapses. We'll see the difference in 3-4 years! We hope!!
