Some years ago, I served on two state committees focused on restoration of salmon and steelhead in California, and with active help from dozens of experts I produced an anthology on the subject (eScholarship Editions, U.C. Press, 1991).
At a recent conference sponsored by PFMC and Fish and Game, I learned that the major problem—
habitat destruction, mainly water diversions— destroying salmonid stocks in earlier times continues today.
Although ocean conditions may be touted as the immediate problem, don't be fooled: Fish stocks depleted by habitat destruction have lost their resilience to recover from such perennial natural threats because their habitat has been consciously, systematically destroyed by corporate agriculture and water interests.
I am proud to know that heavyweights on those old restoration committees carry on the fight and have created Water4Fish. Please listen to them!
