Posted by Jim Martin As you know RFA was instrumental in getting the Section 10 permits for rearing stripers in the first place. We are working to get stripers declared a "resident species" to provide at least some of the protections that native species receive. I am not sure why you are asking me "where was RFA in 2000" when that was six years ago and I became RFA's West Coast Regional Director only two years ago, after Randy Fry was killed by a shark. In fact in 2000 the RFA was only 2-3 yrs old and had no paid staff on the west coast. Believe it or not we do not control NMFS biology staff on issues like the acceptable number of stripers in the system... I do know that RFA tried to get Pombo and Feinstein on the same page on CALFED issues. A lot of this is easier said than done; I do not know about any organization that tackles the political side of these issues harder than the RFA. The RFA has been active in the Allied Fishing Groups efforts - we collected signatures for the postcard camapign at our table at the Fred Hall Show. We are very much in support for better water quality. I have received virtually no information from CSBA on what has been happening on this front. Most of the good information we get on important hearings comes to us from our advisory board member, John Buettler of the CSPA. Slot limits might be a good idea even if you stopped all the poaching and water diversion. RFA is open to all the arguments pro and con, we haven't taken a position on this and would be very interested in hearing all the viewpoints.
