Posted by Jackson Chapman I’ll try and answer your questions. “Does a trophy mean you have to keep the fish?” - No, but to most anglers the options of weighing, photographing and placing the fish on the wall is part of what keeps them coming back time and time again. “I would think everyman would have a better chance of catching that big fish if there was a slot limit, right? “ - Not necessarily and most likely not. If I am bait fishing on the Sacramento River and gut hook (which is most probable) a trophy size striper, take 10 to 15 minutes to land while pulling on his stomach, gills and intestines the chances of this fish surviving are negligible. “We all [sic] suppport better water quality in the Delta, but [sic] sportfishermen have been known for going the extra mile even when the problems in a fishery aren't our fault. We can't keep coastal steelhead, but there's a vibrant C&R Fishery... “ - I am very willing to support further restrictions on striped bass angling (limits, seasons, slots, tags, etc.) if anyone can prove to me that this will save the striped bass fishery. No one has nor do I believe anyone will. The fishery is doomed unless something is done about water diversions and water quality. Diverting our efforts to any other object simply plays into the hands of the water exporters and the current political lackies. “Maybe something needs to be done to preserve the fishery?” - What needs to be done is restore the water flows to prior year 2000 levels, change the timing of the diversions and reclaim and plant stripers as the state does with virtually every other game fish in California.
