Posted by red on 4/13/2006, 5:59 am Senator Kuehl has introduced SB 1574, which would mandate DWR and DFG to study a reduced export pumping alternative as a part of SDIP. Both will be heard in the Senate Natural Resources Committee (9:00 AM, Rm. 112) on 25 April. We’re in the process of drafting detailed letters and bullet points that will be distributed shortly. We’re going to need to flood the office of Senator Kuehl with letters opposing SB 1612 (with copies to Senator Simitian). We also need letters supporting SB 1574. A large turnout at the hearing is essential. More to follow! Cheers! Bill Jennings, Chairman

bullet is headed toward the Delta. Senator Simitian has introduced legislation mandating construction of a Peripheral Canal/Pipe. SB 1612 is a Delta killer!
* The Bill mandates construction of a peripheral canal/pipe
* Mandates intake location downstream of Freeport
* Contains no other details about the size, capacity, or fish protection facility
* An appointed commission would oversee the facility with vague powers, enforcement, or decision- making ability.
* Allows the existing export pumps to be used as well as this new facility
* Has non-specific diversion cap language
* Proposes a wheeling charge for users, monies to be used for Ecosystem Restoration
* AND there is no language that protects the Delta from degradation of water quality, levee stability or fisheries.
