Before the anti movement became so strong there was an almost direct correlation between how wealthy a nation was and it's consumption of tobacco. Today it's a mixed bag on the upper end. The Eastern European nations that dominate the top smoking nations aren't neccesarily the wealthiest. Yet still to this very day the poorest countries have the least smokers.
