Other than an occasional pack of Marlboro Menthol Lights, I rarely indulge in menthol cigarettes, so this doesn't have that much of a direct impact on me. But the idea that if I so choose to buy that pack of Marlboro Menthol Lights, I won't be able to? That pisses me off. (Hope I can say that on this board.) Plus, I know plenty of people who smoke menthol cigarettes, and they're gonna go through the roof if anyone tries to pass this into law. Like Jason says, this is gonna be the final straw that will make smokers (and not just menthol smokers) stand up and say Enough!
I also wasn't crazy about the racial undertones they tried to establish in the article. Yes, I know People of Color (PoC) who smoke menthol cigarettes. But I probably know more white people who do. Does everything have to be racial in this country?? I never considered Newport to be a "black" cigarette. If anything, I considered it to be a "female" cigarette, as I seem to know a disproportionate number of women who smoke Newport. Wonder why they didn't try to play the gender card instead? (A side note: Why are African-Americans referred to as PoC? Black is defined as the absence of color. If anything, white people should be PoC, because white is all the colors combined. But I digress...)
I'd wish them good luck trying to get this passed, but I don't think they need it. Regardless of what we want, the government will do as it damn well pleases. All the while screaming, "But think of the children!" Hey, y'know what? I was a child when I started smoking. Non-menthol cigarettes. Guess I'm an aberation.
