After female smoking in the U.S surprisingly went up in 2008 it was backdown earlier this year. Here are trends for this decade.
2000 21.0%
2001 20.7%
2002 20.0%
2003 19.3%
2004 18.5%
2005 18.1%
2006 18.0%
2007 17.3%
2008 18.2%
2009 (January-March) 17.0%
The only demographic where smoking was up significantly was men aged 45-64 at 28.2%, the highest since 1994. But that is probably a fluke on the high end. With only a quarter of a years sample size you can get some wild results. Women aged 65+ was also unusually high at 11.2% the highest since 1998.
This survey was pre-SCHIP so I would expect the numbers to drop even further by the time the full years data is released. It wouldn't shock me if the female rate will fall to 16%. Of course I hope I'm wrong.
