I agree with you Paul, there's not much fun anymore. Well...where I live anyway. I miss the bars and dance clubs where there was always a good crowd socializing and having a good time. I remember not wanting to go out for the evening before 9:00 PM an any given night because the places didn't get "hopping" until past 11PM. When I turned 18 back in 1975, I could legally drink, smoke and go to the topless joints. Now the family values jerks have the drinking age at 21, nearly all of the "tittie" bars are history thanks to the enacted ordinances and Iowa has a complete smoking ban. The few bars that are left are dead or dying, the dance clubs are gone and most of them now close at 9 or 10PM. You can't even smoke in a bar's outdoor patio area due to the all inclusive smoking ban. Local law enforcement has set up several "stings" where an undercover officer lights up a smoke and another officer times how long it takes for the bar's management to tell the guy to put it out. There are several places here that have lost (or loosing) their liqueur licenses.
A buddy came to visit a couple of weeks ago so we went out to eat and have a few drinks. We had to go out in the parking lot to smoke and they were closing up at 9:30PM so had to leave. We ended up buying a 6 pack a piece and went to a city park to continue our long over due visit. We sat at a picnic table as we smoked and consumed our beers but even this was illegal! The park says "No alcohol or smoking...the park closes at 10PM". What a country we've become!
Maybe instead of being angry at loosing so many of my personal liberties, I should look at this from another angle. I feel lucky that I can remember the old days and got to do all of the fun things that we no longer can. The younger generations only know our anal & politically correct new society.
