Your wish to go to a college-aged bar brought back some good memories of a college bar I used to go to in central Illinois, before that community adopted a citywide smoking ban before Illinois did. 
Although some bars did build patios for smoking(including the bar I liked going to), most bars unfortunately didn't do so, and depressingly force you onto the sidewalk if you want to smoke.
What irritates me more about bars under smoking bans(and further illustrates how unnecessary bans are), are all the times I drive by bars, and often see more than half of patrons taking smoke breaks en masse! I strongly doubt that any more than a handful of bar patrons(aka the anti-smokers and/or ex-smokers of the bunch) surveyed at bars popular with smokers would ever favor indoor bar smoking bans at all, period!
