I was in the same boat, I wanted to read silver age stories that the Sentry supposedly had but everyone forgot about. However, we got this...Though I stuck with it. And I must say that by the end of the series I wanted more!!
The last issue perfectly explains all the little mysteries and clues that were going on throughout the series as well as give a really good and still viable origin story to the Sentry.
SPOILERS!!
As the whole Age of the Sentry story is actually a made up story by Reed Richards who he tells as a bedtime story to Franklin, he uses this as a way to form ideas of how the Sentry is so powerful and where the power comes from? Which is answered perfectly in the last issue.
We find out all the 616 origin still exists...though some of it is a bit different like him working at the Encyclopedia company, etc but it's kind of made plausible as the Sentry's existence in this Age of the Sentry Universe changes the very laws of reality to accommodate him: reality bends to his existence. but in terms of creating an explanation where the actual SENTRY power comes from; Reed theorizes that The Pure Sentry being actually comes from a Universe of a million exploding suns, one so violent and where the laws of physics are so different only someone that powerful can survive, and ruled by a giant celestial being who can turn off and on schrodinger's theory like a light.
However, when Cranio travelled back in time to find out the origin of the Sentry, the Pure energy Sentry broke free into our world and, the inventor of the serum, the Professor worked this out, asking Weapon X for the Super Soldier serum which he used to help capture this pure energy being, embedding it/him into the serum and then had it ready to inject into a soldier...however Robbie Reynolds found the serum and became the SENTRY!
That's just the explanation in nutshell, they also explained that his power actually comes from the fact his atoms are always a step ahead of the timestream. I always wondered wtf this meant and how it was possible!? Well, answered! Reed theorizes that for the Sentry to exist in our universe the Universe creates a second timeline in which the Sentry exists in, which is always a step ahead of our timeline, which allows the Universe to accomadate such a powerful being. This is why the Sentry can do things other people cant, like bring back his wife from the dead, create a light which sobers the Hulk and etc. But for this Universe to accomodate such a massive positive power it needs to balance it with a negative power, hence the Void.
Anyway, for fans who have been following the Sentry since day one, this is a perfect tribute to one of the best, badly used, heroes out there! And one bad ass sci-fi trip! Best sci-fi comic fun I have read in a very long time! I loved it.

: As well done as this book is and as much as
: I'm enjoying it, there's still a vague sense
: of dissatisfaction after reading each issue.
: See, as good as a Silver Age Superman spoof
: is, I've long wanted a retelling of Sentry
: adventures he was allegedly retconned out
: of. Who do people think fought Cranio?
: Which Avengers missions did he participate
: in and how? Things like that. Yes, this
: mini is better than seeing the nutjob with
: power of a gazillion exploding meds but not
: quite what I wanted...
