Got your attention? Good. I'd like to repeat some things that I wrote elsewhere. I like the Sentry as well as most of you but I feel that the Sentry is not really a heroic character. He is a tragic figure ultimately, a tragic figure that possesses an inordinate amount of raw power. He is a major threat in a bad way and he is in no way "Marvel's Superman."
That's partially because the Sentry's superpowers encompass more than just strength, flying, invulnerability, x-ray vision and super-ventriloquism! My guess is that the Sentry harnesses the quantum fluctuation of the 3 degree microwave background, perhaps on the level of a false vacuum. Some of that sort of make sense.
Anyway, with this ability he can use photons (bosons) to rearrange matter and energy at a quantum level: he can control all matter and energy, at nearly any level, using energy itself to manipulate space-time! Thus the only superhero who can take him down is possibly the Silver Surfer! It also means that his "Superman-powers" really are a contrivance of the mentally ill Bob Reynolds. He can really mimic or even acquire any superpowers that he wants to! If Bob wanted to have stretchy powers, he can... If Bob wants to shot bolts of mental energy, he can! This, plus the fact that the Void is also the Sentry means that the Sentry is ultimately not a superhero at all. He's a compelling character, and I like him but he's really a disturbing character who ultimately poses a threat.
Don't get me wrong I love some of the metaphysical ideas that come along with "godlike" characters such as Leonard Tippett, the Phoenix and even Alpha the Ultimate Mutant (whatever happened to him). This is why I like the Sentry but what I don't like is the mishandling of the Sentry. This whole business of him being like "Superman" is ridiculous. Those powers are what Bob Reynolds wants to have but Bob Reynolds is ultimately not very heroic: he's eminently dangerous.
I hope Marvel constructs a high-quality plot around the Sentry and avoids actually making him "Marvel's Superman. That not only denigrates the Sentry but also denigrates Marvel as well as, yes, Superman!
