Transition from Sentry miniseries (2001) to New Avengers

At the end of the original mini, everyone had once again forgot about the Sentry.
When reintroduced in New Avengers 1, we learn that whenever Sentry tells Fury to lock him up, he gets locked up.
Has it ever been explained what happened in the middle there?
