How do we know anything about the Sentry's past is true?

This is something that has been bugging me for awhile. The Sentry is mentally unstable. He often does not know when his own powers are being used. It is said he has unlimited psionic potential and had demonstrated the ability to manipulate memories. His rogues gallery only appears when the Sentry is around. How than do we know any of the claims of the Sentry being the first hero or any of his previous adventures before he showed up present-day are true and not some elaborate fantasy his mind has put together and placed in the minds of others. Even Tony Stark with all of his information is hesitant to believe any of the Sentry's claims.
