Posted by Stacy Dooks In the end, I think Robert came to terms with the better angels of his nature, and at the last it was literally both halves of his persona, the Apollonian Sentry and Dionysian Void that were hashing out the source of their conflict. I agree with jsf that for the longest time Robert identified more with the Void than the Sentry. Who couldn't identify with that? Its far easier to look upon what we cannot do than what we can. But at the end, I think Robert came to terms with his power, his hope, and embraced his essential heroism. The Void may indeed return, but Robert will ultimately side with the better angels of his nature. At the very least the dynamic has shifted more toward the positive than the negative if the last page was any indicator. As to the idea of the serum affecting everyone. . .I actually like that. Mind you, the original serum can only be found in Robert's blood, but the idea that this potential for incredible good and unspeakable evil exists within us all is ultimately pretty damn satisfying. It speaks to the reader and bring us closer to Robert. Make no mistake, he's plenty messed up, but it allows us to look on his travails and struggles with a bit more compassion. After all, in the long run we're all equal parts darkness and light. I've read and enjoyed both versions of the Sentry's exploits, and I see them as a mix of early Vertigo and 1960s Marvel comics, with a heavy dose of philisophical pondering. Of course, I wouldn't have minded if the whole thing had had a little more of the middle part than the other two, but you take what you can get. People decry the two series for being different, but there's the drawback of suddenly having to produce an unexpected sequel to a series that was thought to be a singular story (Matrix anyone?). I didn't mind it; the first series was a commentary on heroism, addiction, the consequences of the two. The second series focused more on the essential riddle of the Sentry and the Void, and how they fit together. Ultimately they stand as two separate stories to me, and are only really tied together by the characters. Kind of like Stephen King's Desperation and Richard Bachman's The Regulators. Now that things have changed so dramatically, I'm hoping Sentry will take a more active role in the Marvel universe, rather than simply being the New Avengers resident Deus Ex Machina. With the imminent return of Thor it'd be nice to see if the golden guardian of good has what it takes to be a first-stringer rather than simply keeping the thunder god's seat warm. -Stacy. --Previous Message--![]()

Hmm. . .mixed feelings abound through the course of this mini. For the longest time I hated it (though I did enjoy issue #3; I do love the Sentry/Hulk dynamic, and the more heroic aspects of Robert's life, shame they couldn't have done more) then the last issue comes along and has me rethinking the whole affair.
: I feel that the original mini is not ignored
: in the latest one they still stick with same
: scenerio that he was forgotten now he's back
: I think it's perfectly logical if Robby
: really doesn't remember the story line in
: the first mini for awhile. I mean after
: reading the first mini even I asked myself
: how many times could that specific chain of
: events occured and it was just wiped from
: everyone's mind that the story played out n
: the original was not a once kinda thing. I
: also don't believe bendis really changed
: anything i think he assumed that the Sentry
: eventually kept remembering and bringing the
: void back and Read richards eventually made
: him believe he killed his wife then had him
: isolated on the raft so nothing would remind
: him about his past.

: : Okay,
:
: So can we finally admit that this mini
: series had NOTHING TO DO with the original
: concept as presented a few years ago in the
: first? I loved that series and was excited
: when Bendis brought the Sentry into New
: Avengers. But Bendis' Sentry clearly had
: similarties to the original but rebooted why
: no one remembered who he is. I thought at
: least Jenkins would stick to the original
: origin in this second mini, but from reading
: all sorts of reviews, including those here,
: and flipping through the issue, it's clear
: he hasn't. For the life of me I can't figure
: out why nobody has commented on this. I'm
: not saying call Jenkins out or anything. If
: the second mini stands as a decent read,
: fine. But it just strikes me as odd that the
: reboot of a character introduced only a few
: years ago has never even been brought up. In
: fact I've read some posts by fans who have
: been hoping this would all make sense in the
: end and tie into the original mini.
