I would say those were the original train order signals. That simple type was one of the earliest types used on U.S. railroads. The GTW had quite a few locations on branch lines that had those -- e.g. Greenville Sub, etc. Carsonville was not the end of the line -- it extended south (timetable east) as far as Croswell, and still does to this day.
