Re: Saginaw Sub Upgrades
At the time, the upgrades were really warranted because of the traffic levels. (Hard to believe now!) In 1972 they added #2 main from S. McGrew to Atwood Wye with commensurate crossovers. In 1977-78, they really "went to town." #2 track was extended from Atwood Wye to Atwood Jct with two set off tracks (E & F) added off #2. The siding at Gd Blanc was extended to the north and power switches with signals were added. (This was a tremendous help to get trains picking up there off the main track so northbounds didn't stack up at Newark and Clyde). Also a "long lead" was added west of the main south of town for the Gd Blanc crews to use without having to foul the main track. Clyde siding (which only held 110 cars) was extended down to Highland and then held 180 cars -- this was a big help! Wixom siding was extended to the north -- I didn't see the need for that. At Lincoln, a second pass was added so we could get trains off the main while picking up -- a big improvement. At Novi, power switches and signals were added to each end of the siding. This was also a big help to keep trains moving north out of Plymouth. The S. Pass at Plymouth was extended all the way down to Hix Road -- this also was a major improvement. The Wayne S. Pass was extended south a ways -- I didn't see much help from that one. Around the same time, the interlocking at Romulus was remote controlled. The upgrades at Gd Blanc, Clyde, Lincoln, Novi and Plymouth made the most difference to keep things moving.
