Re: GM Wyoming (Grand Rapids) stamping plant traffic
I can't comment on specifics, but I do recall NS sending a transfer job to Wyoming Yard with cars to send to plants east. From what I recall hearing, but never observing, the cars were going to CP who still had run through trains at the time. The cars would be left on the tracks to the east of Wyoming Yard. I can't be specific as to the number of cars, but I do recall cars being sent to these tracks in the yard regularly.
I also recall NS used to have a significant number of 86 foot boxcars that would go south as well. In the late 1990's and early 2000's there was a significant number of customers using 86's around Grand Rapids. The GM plant used them, plus the place in Ionia was getting them as well. Also I think Greenville was shipping out in 86's. Sad all of that is gone now. Only one of the customers is still in business and they stopped using rail which lead to the line being pulled up between Ionia and Lowell.
