Caboose"
This probably isn't the kind of experience you were looking for, but back in the late 70's I was on a dispatcher's review trip over some of my territory and rode the caboose of train CA30 from Saginaw to (almost) Carleton. I sat up in the cupola and the conductor cooked me a nice fat, juicy hamburger on the caboose stove! On that trip, we got headed into the siding at Novi and had to wait for 5 northbounds before we could head toward Plymouth. We ended up dying at Waltz, just a couple miles short of our destination of Carleton. A taxi picked us up and transported us to the hotel in Monroe where the crews stayed on that job before returning to Saginaw the next day as train SA31.
