Re: Mackinaw City question
Adding to Don's post, he is correct that D&M switched the Chief, inheriting what had been SOP when NYC nee-MC, owned the ferry slip lead. I have posted previously about the one time MIGN switched the boat when D&M, due a winter power shortage, did not send a unit to Mackinaw City. It should be remembered that a state functionary's decision to give up the state's first right of purchase of the entire Mackinaw City rail yard, so that the D&M could and did, led to the intercession of State Rep. E. Dan Stevens. His timely role caused the MDOT Rail Section to reverse their decision to contract with soon-to-be Conrail and then contract with Michigan Northern, referred to rather disparagingly as "Mark Campbell's paper railroad." I also concur with Don's assessment that D&M bought the real estate for future sales to developers, which is what eventually happened.
