Back then a dispatcher didn't have a territory covering multiple states. They knew their tracks, their trains, their crews. They knew how to dispatch. Passenger trains had priority, delay one and expect to have a chat with the boss.
Freight trains weren't the 150 car land barges of today. The freight cars weren't as long and carried less weight compared to today's cars. You had more sidings to make meets and the trains would fit in those sidings. They also didn't squeeze the last horsepower out of the locomotives like happens all too often today. The freight trains back then moved or could get out of the way.
